Conway Advocates for Bicycling & the City of Conway’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Group are hosting a FREE bike rodeo for kids ages 5 to 15.

Most Important Stuff

  • Purpose: Teach survival skills to young bicyclists, ages 5 to 15.
  • Cost: FREE!
  • All participants must:
    • RSVP via email, text or phone call to Amanda Potter Cole (amanda@ampcideas.com, 479/981-1343)
    • Check in at the registration table to complete the parental/guardian waiver form.
  • Kids must already know how to ride a bicycle.
  • We have a FEW bikes/helmets for kids to use, but those who can do so need to bring their own bicycle & helmet.
  • A limited number of loaner bicycles and helmets will be available for those without.
  • The wearing of a helmet is required and helmets will be available.
  • Parents/guardians are expected to stay and observe during the bike rodeo, but let the kids go through the stations with the volunteers and socialize with the other kids.
  • Inclement weather policy: If it is raining or imminent severe weather is pending at 8:00 am, we may postpone the event, so watch the Facebook Event Page for updates.
  • Limit: 20 kids

What to Expect

  • Check-in & complete waiver.
  • Participants will be guided through five stations:
  • Station 1: Learn the ABC’s (air, brakes, chain) of bike inspection and how to fit your helmet for safety.
  • Station 2: Learn the proper ways to start and stop a bike and how to dodge rocks and other hazards in the roadway without swerving your bike into harm’s way. The roadway is simulated by marked lines laid out on a closed parking lot.
  • Station 3: Practice riding with simulated traffic and looking (scanning) to the side and behind before signaling and changing lanes on the simulated roadway.
  • Station 4: Practice leaving a simulated driveway onto a “street.” In real life, too many accidents involve child cyclists encountering cars in crashes when leaving a driveway. We’ll practice coming to a complete stop with both feet on the ground, looking left, right, and left again before getting onto the road.
  • Station 5: Practice scanning and signaling while obeying stop signs and looking for cross and turning traffic in a simulated intersection before proceeding.
  • If time allows, there will be more fun after the 5th station!
  • Hydrate! Water provided. (Please recycle!)
  • Have fun!
  • Finish before noon.
