Mountain biking has grown from a few guys on fat-tire road bikes goofing around on the trail in the late 1970s to include many different forms of dirt riding, from cross country to downhill/ freeride, and now includes countless participants. Our local mountain bike trail system at Cadron Settlement Park is most likely one of Arkansas’ best-kept secrets. Over the last 5-8 years, it has been developed by local mountain bike enthusiasts to include a total of five miles of single-track cross-country trail. What was once a patchwork of sketchy trails has become in recent years a nice trail system for mountain bikers and hikers alike. Located on seventy-three acres of land off of Hwy 319, Cadron is a great place to take your mountain bike off road. Several local cycling enthusiasts work diligently year-round to keep the trails well-groomed and accessible. While Cadron has slowly become a go-to trail for central Arkansas mountain bikers, the trails lack features to make it true mountain biking destination for the state. Cedar Glades Park in Hot Springs includes the Cedar Glades Trail, which has become not only one of the better off-road trails in the state, but also the park features a nice outdoor activity park with an adult tree house, climbing wall, radio-controlled car track and air field, a handicapped hiking trail, two playgrounds, a picnic area and a disc golf course. Cedar Glades Park is a jewel for Hot Springs locals and Arkansans in general, but this destination park, full of green trees and bustling with visitors, was once just a pile of trash. That’s right, the park was once Hot Springs’ landfill. Over the last eight years, Hot Springs has repurposed this

land beautifully. Conway mountain bikers with the cooperation of Conway Advocates for Bicycling (CAB) and the City’s Bicycling and Pedestrian Advocacy Board (BPAB) are developing plans to create a similar area at the site of our old landfill located on Blaney Hill Road. In the coming months, BPAB will work with City Council to further investigate the possibility of transforming this old landfill into a system of beginner and family-friendly trails for off-road biking and hiking along with picnic areas. This would be the initial step to creating a family outdoor activities area that would promote healthy lifestyles, generate income for our community and make Conway a destination city for outdoor enthusiasts.
